When Banana Stains Fade

by Frances-Marie Coke

When Banana Stains Fade is a compelling saga that spans over four generations of a Jamaican family, primarily focusing on the resilience of its women. But the men are just as intriguing. Though some fulfill the worst stereotypes about “good fi nutten Jamaica man,” others defy the negative images and they wrap the women in their lives in tenderness and fidelity.

This novel follows the journey of twenty-six-year-old Zarah, who deviates from the path life set out for her, thinking she will escape family woes and make her own way to happiness.  Through her journey, and those of her ancestors, the narrative unravels a tapestry of memories and events that leave no one unchanged.

Set against the backdrop of Jamaica’s stunning landscapes, remnants of its colonials origins, and the wrath of Hurricane Gilbert,  the story delves into the complexities of familial bonds and the secrets that shape the characters' lives.

Like her ancestors, Zarah's journey is marked by struggle, acceptance of responsibility, self-discovery, and the quest for redemption. When Banana Stains Fade offers readers an emotionally resonant narrative, rich in themes of social inequity, the impact of history on cultural traditions, family relationships, love’s impostors, and the quest for personal transformation.
